Top 5 Cocktail Bars & Lounges in NYC

May 27, 2020 No Comments

You’ve heard this city never sleeps, well here’s some cocktails to not sleep on either.

There is a certain love of grabbing a cocktail with friends, or slinking away to your favorite hangout to gather your thoughts and let go of the week. Whatever your reason, cocktails that tickle the taste buds and keep you dreaming of the last sip are always in style. Here’s a list of my top 5 cocktail lounges and bars in NYC.

5. Jungle Bird

Look no further for your classic Tiki Bar with a fun upscale twist. Walking in will greet you with the smells of the tropics— pineapple, rum, savory treats that tickle the taste buds. The fun interior, and the exclusive Canopy Room upstairs, will leave you feeling like you’ve had a vacation on any gloomy winter day in NYC. Lap up the sun with the tantalizing cocktails such as Lovefool and I Drove All Night. The fun never stops here. Drink Rec: Jungle Bird

4. The Belfry

This unassuming front hides a gem of a bar. Known for its picklebacks, stick around for their daily special. A favorite being “Old Fashioned Wednesday” focused on specialty Old Fashions and live music. What’s not to miss here? The Happy Hour with its half-priced bottles of wine. Bring a group and grab a table under the twinkling lights for a night everyone will talk about. Drink Rec: Rosé or Prosecco for Happy Hour, any of the seasonal Old Fashions on Wednesday.

3. King Cole Bar – St. Regis Hotel

There can’t be much more quintessential New York than sipping a drink in the St. Regis lounge staring at a Maxfield Parrish mural. For one worth the money, I nominate the King Cole Bar. Wear something dressier and slide on into one of the classic New York destinations. Sip your champagne while catching up on the lastest gossip and pretend you have secrets worth divulging. Known for its Red Snapper renditions, you really can’t go wrong with any of the cocktails. Relax, lean back, and enjoy one of NYC’s finest. Drink Rec: Jazz Me Blues (seasonal drink)

2. Bathtub Gin

We can’t talk cocktails without a classic. Bathtub Gin lives up to its name, a copper bathtub in the middle of the floor for those brave enough to take a dip. Hidden behind the storefront of Stone Street Coffee Co, you’ll have the bouncer asking: coffee or cocktails? This space is one for the books, and if you have one shot at NYC— Go! Cocktails that knock your swing socks off, live music, dim lights; you’ll definitely feel the 20’s speakeasy vibes. But with a name like Bathtub Gin, you can’t leave without sipping that giggle juice and marveling at the intricate flavors that highlight the speakeasy’s namesake. Drink Rec: Bathtub G+T

1. Lovers of Today

A go-to must have if you’re visiting NYC. With craft cocktails and a killer happy hour, Lovers of Today is always at the top of my list. The unassuming stairs leading down to the tiny bar can be easily missed if you don’t know what to look for. Though it fills up fast (get there early for Happy Hour to snag a coveted booth) and many have to remain standing, the ambience of the place is part of the magic. Rich drinks for a fraction of the cost, you simply cannot miss out on this local fav. Drink Recs: Waterloo Sunset and Fan Mail.

Whether you’re swaying to jazz at Bathtub Gin or making your way to the bar-top at Lovers, I hope you find time to explore these favorites and have a good time.
